Building the American musical’s future on the foundation of the past.

UnsungMusicalsCo. founder Ben West is committed to fostering the next generation of musical theatre artists though lectures and workshops built upon our principal of “History in Practice.” Offering a practical, functional, active application of musical theatre history, UMC’s programs are uniquely designed to expand the vocabulary and skill set of young artists through direct engagement in the exploration of the form’s history.

In the words of lyricist-composer Harold Rome, “Whether you want to be original, or whether you want to be conventional, you still have to know what has been done, in order to be either.”

West’s speaking engagements include panels and lectures at the Library of Congress, U.S. Copyright Office, The New York Public Library, and Yale University, where he also curated an exhibit for the Irving S. Gilmore Music Library. He has also presented at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education.
